MALS 301: Intro to Mexican American and Latina/o Studies
 

This course offers an in-depth exploration of the historical, cultural, and social experiences of Mexican Americans and Latina/os in the United States. Students will engage with research and literary works that explore central topics in the field, including colonialism/coloniality, (im)migration, language, health, identity, and activism. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the course will consider the shared and distinct experiences of Mexican and Latina/o Americans in the U.S. across time and geographical settings. We will also discuss race/racialization, class, gender, and sexuality, as well as the study of these issues within Mexican American, Chicanx, and Latina/o Studies. The course will incorporate research articles, fiction writing, films, art, music, podcasts, and community engagement activities as course assignments.

This original course reviews research concerning language brokering in Latinx communities by first and second-generation immigrant Latinx children and adult children. Consideration of psychological, social, economical, political, and family impacts of language brokering.

This original course provides an overview of the economic, labor, psychological, cultural, educational, and political experiences of Latina/o families in the United States—special consideration of children’s responsibility and role in the family unit.

CCASM 127: Farmworker Movements, Social Justice, and UFW Legacy
 

Historical and social context of farmworker organizing, including its multiracial origins and its influence on the fight for equality of working women. Specific focus on the organizing of United Farm Workers and Farm Laborers Organizing Committee, and their relationship to AFL-CIO, other unions, and their influence on the Chicano Movement. Special consideration of health and educational disparities within agricultural communities. (Cross listed with Labor Studies M127).

This Original course, review of bilingual research regarding potential benefits of bilingualism, and exploration of social, cultural, and political framing and challenges to bilingualism. Special consideration of second language acquisition and child language brokering.

EDU 205: Language Studies: Second Language Acquisition Pedagogy and Politics 

​

Analysis of the English language development of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking skills of elementary and secondary students in culturally and linguistically diverse public-school classrooms. Includes the examination of theories and factors (both pedagogical and political) in first and second language development universals and differences in language structure and use and the transference of first and second language literacy skills.
